Combined Surgical Removal of the Keloid and Post-Operative Superficial Radiation Therapy
Conveniently located to serve Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.
At The Keloid Plastic Surgery Center, our goal is to provide our patients with personalized care and long-term results. That is why we offer combined keloid surgical removal and post-operative superficial radiation therapy. This two-step process both removes the initial keloid and prevents further keloid growth by using low doses of radiation to destroy keloid forming cells.
Surgical Removal of Keloids
Keloid surgery is often performed on large keloids that have grown beyond the margins of the initial wound. While the surgical removal of keloids can provide temporary relief, there is an incredibly high recurrence rate which means that a large portion of patients will experience keloid regrowth (50-95%). Fortunately, the risk of recurrence can be significantly reduced by undergoing post-operative Superficial Radiation Therapy to 5-10%.
Post-Operative Radiation Therapy
Superficial radiotherapy following keloid surgical removal can prevent the recurrence of keloids by destroying keloid forming cells in the targeted area. At The Keloid Plastic Surgery Center, we perform post-operative superficial radiation therapy(S.R.T.) using the SRT-100, an FDA-approved machine that can precisely target and destroy keloid forming cells using low doses of radiation without harming the surrounding healthy tissue. It is a proven treatment that has achieved up to a 90% cure rate. The radiation only goes skin deep, avoiding going into deeper tissues or organs.
There may be some hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation of the skin, and increased risk of skin cancer, and wound dehiscence. Erythema, alopecia, atrophy, ulceration, and skin necrosis are rare.
Cost and Payment Options
The cost of your combined keloid surgical removal and post-operative superficial radiation therapy will depend on several factors. During your consultation, the office staff can let you know what the expected out of pocket cost of your procedure and post-operative S.R.T. will be and go over the payment options available to you.
